I was on the BBC website and found a reel about Intellectual Humility. The topic fascinated me and made me think of how well it ties within an Enterprise Digital Transformation initiative. I fully know, and I am sure you do as well, that NO ONE EVER has an ego on these programs. Everyone plays nice, and the only silos to be found are in distant fields, filled with rich grains. Okay, now let’s look at this with realistic viewpoints.

Intellectual humility is often described as an intellectual virtue, along with other perceived virtues such as open-mindedness, intellectual courage, and integrity, and in contrast to proposed intellectual vices, such as pride and arrogance.

Intellectual humility is about being actively curious about your blind spots. Being honest with yourself first and foremost, as well as within a team structure. So how does this tie into DX initiatives, nonetheless, why should you care? Simple. It’s called the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

In the field of psychology, the Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with low ability at a task overestimate their ability. It is related to the cognitive bias of illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability.

Our individual thinking is that this lack of insight into ignorance and incompetence is domain-specific. That is, each of us has pockets of incompetence we do not know about. It’s not that there are some people who in general don’t realize their deficits (e.g., because they are less intelligent, for example). Rather, the Dunning–Kruger effect is an issue that hits everyone within their specific pockets of deficit.

Acknowledgment of existing ignorance, and or deficits, is not derogatory, and moreover efficient in terms of execution and timeline adherence within a program aspect. In the end, it aids or accelerates cost containment. Proper self-estimation of your own abilities, and or contribution to a program helps extensively with planning and road mapping. The more accurate the plan or roadmap, the far fewer budget overruns and or scope changes will be needed. Leading to the successful completion of an initiative.
